Google ships Gemini 3.8 Flash and a gated Flash Cyber variant for vetted security teams
The third Flash release in six weeks targets software engineering and agentic work, while a new Fairwind program controls access to the cyber-focused model.
Google introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash on Thursday, making it available to developers immediately, along with a gated sibling called Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber that is reserved for vetted security teams. Google CEO Sundar Pichai described it on X as "Our 3rd Flash release in just 6 wks" and said it makes sizable gains over 3.7 Flash in software engineering, agentic work and multi-step reasoning. Google says that on the DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark the model beats most larger frontier models at solving complex engineering problems end to end, at a lower cost. Tulsee Doshi, Google's senior director of product management, and Raluca Ada Popa, Gemini Security Lead at Google DeepMind, attributed part of the improvement to the model taking extra reasoning steps and repeated tool calls before settling on an answer. "3.8 Flash works harder," they wrote. Developers who prefer lower cost over depth can reduce the effort setting or stay on 3.7 Flash. Access to Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber runs through a new program called Fairwind, built for trusted government authorities, critical infrastructure operators and software maintainers hunting vulnerabilities in large codebases. Doshi and Popa said Google has "invested in vulnerability fixing from the start," placing patching ahead of offensive work such as exploitation. The gated release reflects a broader industry pattern of restricting the most capable cyber models to approved users.
