OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra, a cheaper mid-sized model built for computer use and everyday office work

API prices are $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI says Terra matches GPT-6 Astra on its agent benchmark at a tenth of the price per token.

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26. It is a mid-sized model aimed at computer use, visual reasoning, coding and routine work such as filling out forms, editing video, interpreting technical drawings and drafting proposals. The model looks at the screen and operates applications much as a person would. OpenAI says API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, which it describes as 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. On Agents' Last Exam, OpenAI reports that Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort while costing about a third as much. The company says it performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token and finishes tasks more than three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. OpenAI also says Terra makes fewer errors on an internal benchmark. All of these figures come from OpenAI and have not been independently verified. If they hold up, cheaper and faster computer-use models could make automated desktop work affordable for more businesses than the company's larger models do.
