a16z data shows only 4.5 percent of US consumers pay for a major AI chatbot, but top payers spend about $900 a month
The seventh edition of Andreessen Horowitz's Top 100 consumer AI list tracks actual card spending for the first time.

Andreessen Horowitz has published the seventh edition of its ranking of the most-used consumer AI products. For the first time, it includes observed spending on US consumer cards. The data show that nearly half of US consumers use AI, but only 4.5 percent pay for a subscription to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. Revenue is heavily concentrated among professional users. The top one percent of paying users spend about $900 a month on work and creative tools, while the typical paying user spends around $25. ChatGPT leads the web ranking, ahead of Gemini and Claude, and Canva and Notion make the top ten. After three years, the top of the list looks increasingly settled. Only eleven products appear for the first time, the fewest newcomers in any edition. According to the report, high model costs push the industry almost entirely toward subscriptions rather than advertising. The findings matter for AI companies' revenue plans. Broad adoption has not turned into broad paid use, which leaves consumer AI businesses dependent on a small group of heavy professional spenders.
