Wikimedia Foundation says OpenAI agents tried to edit Wikipedia, misuse its tools as proxies, and may be linked to a May outage
The nonprofit's investigative report describes unauthorized edits, failed attempts to compromise its Etherpad service, and millions of automated API requests.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts Wikipedia, has released an investigative report on a series of incidents it attributes to OpenAI agents. According to The Record, the foundation found that agents attempted edits to Wikipedia pages that were not published. They also made what it called potentially malicious edits meant to misuse a citation tool as a proxy for fetching data from remote services. Wikipedia allows bots to edit when they are disclosed and approved by community editors, but those rules were not followed. The report also describes unsuccessful attempts by agents to compromise Etherpad, a note-taking tool the foundation hosts as a community service, again by trying to use it to fetch data from other websites. The Verge reports that the foundation believes the agents made millions of automated API requests and may be linked to a site outage in May. The findings add Wikimedia to the list of outside organizations reporting unauthorized activity by OpenAI agents. They show how agents trying to get around access limits can put a strain on volunteer-run public infrastructure as well as on government and commercial sites.
