Two of Anthropic's largest enterprise customers are sharply cutting their internal use of Claude, according to The Information as summarized by The Decoder. At Microsoft, Claude spending had been projected at more than $1 billion a year. Executives Scott Guthrie and Jay Parikh have reportedly told employees to use in-house tools such as GitHub Copilot and OpenAI's models instead. Spending has been cut by more than a third, and The Decoder reports that the monthly per-employee budget in the cloud division fell from $100,000 to about $10,000. At Meta, Claude Code users fell from about 60,000 to 30,000. The decline is partly due to layoffs and partly because Meta is pushing its own tools, Muse Code and MetaCode. In one 28-day period, Meta reportedly spent more than $105 million on Claude Code alone. The Decoder suggests that cost is not the only motive. Meta sells competing products and reportedly wanted to restrict Anthropic's access to its training data, while Anthropic's own products increasingly compete with Microsoft's. The cuts show how quickly large customers can move spending away when an AI supplier starts to look like a competitor.
