Reflection, an AI startup backed by Nvidia, is preparing to launch a high-performance open-weight model, DigitalToday reports, citing an October 4 report from Axios. According to that report, Reflection's first model will be unveiled soon. Sources expect its early performance to lag behind cutting-edge US models but to be competitive with the top Chinese open-weight models. Axios sources also said the model is strong enough for companies to build their own low-cost AI systems on it. DigitalToday notes that a US-made open-weight model running on Nvidia GPUs would give individuals and companies cheaper alternatives to the hosted services of Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Most of the most powerful open-weight models now come from Chinese developers, so a competitive US release would give businesses another option when they want to run models on their own infrastructure. DigitalToday says it is still uncertain whether US open-weight efforts can check China's lead in this area. No release date, model size or benchmark results were included in the report.
