Beijing rebukes Amodei's call to curb China's AI ahead of a Trump-Xi meeting

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday pushed back against Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei's call for the United States to curb China's artificial intelligence capabilities. Amodei made the call in the lengthy essay he published on Saturday arguing for a global slowdown in AI development. In it he warned that a Chinese lead in AI would pose grave danger for the United States and the world, and he urged continued restrictions on sales of cutting-edge AI chips and chipmaking equipment to China to preserve the American edge. Asked about the essay at a regular press conference, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said all parties should work together on AI. Fearmongering, confrontation, and vicious competition will only disrupt the process of global AI governance, which serves no one's interest, Guo said. The exchange comes as President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are expected to discuss AI governance, among other topics, at a meeting planned for September 24. Trump on Sunday downplayed calls for his administration to slow AI development. The response shows that the pacing debate started by American lab leaders is now a diplomatic issue, with Beijing framing export controls and slowdown proposals as obstacles to cooperation rather than safety measures.
