French AI lab Mistral AI said on Tuesday that it has raised €3 billion, about $3.58 billion, at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, about $24.39 billion. Mistral describes the Series D as the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, with the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. The company says it will use the money to scale compute capacity, build infrastructure, accelerate commercial growth, and expand internationally. TechCrunch reports that Mistral's stated goal is not to build a European ChatGPT but to remain an AI lab, and that the funding supports a shift toward addressing European concerns about dependence on the United States for technology. That positioning includes a plan to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030 and tools unveiled in August that let customers choose which regions process their AI queries. Mistral has also begun hosting third-party open-weight models, including Chinese ones, to present itself as a services provider that lets customers control which models they use. The round matters for European enterprises and governments weighing where their AI workloads run, and for the broader question of whether a European lab can fund frontier-scale infrastructure.
