Microsoft's Project Zenith targets developer PCs that run 30-billion-parameter models locally

Microsoft has introduced Project Zenith, a ready-to-code Windows 11 experience for developer-class PCs capable of running AI models with more than 30 billion parameters locally, without relying on metered cloud tokens, Help Net Security reported on Tuesday. The configuration is designed for systems with at least 64 GB of unified memory and memory bandwidth of 250 GB/s or more, pairing that hardware with a preconfigured software environment for coding, testing and experimentation. The first Project Zenith systems will run on AMD Ryzen AI Halo, with additional devices from OEM and silicon partners expected in the coming months. Microsoft says the machines will also benefit from ongoing Windows 11 work on performance, reliability, Search, File Explorer and memory usage. The software side ships with preinstalled tools covering programming languages and runtimes, source control and productivity. Windows Terminal and Visual Studio Code are pinned to the Taskbar by default. File Explorer is set to show file extensions, hidden files, the full path in the title bar and the details pane, with long-path support enabled. Recently used files and sync provider tips are turned off for a cleaner workspace. The move positions Windows for developers who want to run sizeable open-weight models on their own hardware rather than pay per token for hosted inference. It also signals that memory capacity and bandwidth, rather than raw GPU count, are becoming the defining specifications for local AI development machines.
