Arm unveils CSS for Mobile 2 aimed at on-device agents and neural graphics

Arm introduced Compute Subsystem for Mobile 2 on Tuesday at its Arm Everywhere China event in Shanghai. The company describes it as an AI-native compute platform built for the system-level demands of agentic AI and for a new generation of cinematic mobile graphics. It succeeds last year's Lumex CSS. The platform combines two new components. The Arm C2 CPU cluster pairs C2-Ultra, which Arm calls its most powerful mobile CPU, with C2-Pro cores, each carrying two SME2 units to support responsive on-device AI. The Mali G2-Ultra NX GPU introduces dedicated neural accelerators, which Arm says unlock a class of graphics experiences previously out of reach on phones. The Register reports the designs chase lower latency and richer games within a 1 W power budget, and that Arm claims desktop-class gaming within a smartphone's power constraints. In a post announcing the platform, Chris Bergey, Arm's executive vice president for edge AI, argues that AI is moving from individual features to persistent agents that must maintain context, run applications, coordinate models and services, and act on a user's behalf within the thermal limits of a handset. Arm's broader strategic case, according to The Register, is that AI workloads now run largely in the cloud but will increasingly shift to devices at the network edge, because round trips to data centers add latency, connectivity dependence and cost at scale. The announcement matters to handset makers and app developers who plan around Arm's yearly platform cadence.
