Replit's CEO says the company has stopped working with Anthropic, but insiders say the partnership is still in place
Amjad Masad cited cost, partnership and performance, saying OpenAI's Sol and Astra models do better on Replit's benchmark.

Speaking onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt, Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said the AI coding platform is no longer working with Anthropic. He said the decision came down to several reasons, including cost. "I think ChatGPT is better now," Masad said. He added that Replit uses an internal benchmark and also publishes a public one, and that OpenAI's Sol and Astra models consistently perform better at building vibe-coded applications from scratch. "It was a decision based on both cost, partnership, and performance," he said. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there had been no sign until now that it had moved away from Anthropic. Under that earlier arrangement, Replit used Claude models to run its platform, and the partnership was said to have helped its revenue grow significantly. People familiar with the relationship disputed Masad's account. One person, who asked not to be named, told TechCrunch the partnership was still in place, and the company's website, blog posts and social media posts show it had been using Anthropic products. The dispute shows how hard AI coding platforms compete over model suppliers, with cost and benchmark results weighing heavily on which lab they choose.
