Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5, which it says is 30 percent faster with no price increase
It is the first Sonnet model placed under the cyber safeguards that apply to Fable and Opus, and Haiku 5.5 is due in the coming weeks.
Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family and a mid-tier complement to Opus 5.5. The company says it runs more than 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30 percent less for most work. The listed price is unchanged at $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens and $0.20 per million cached reads, but the model typically needs far fewer tokens to finish the same work. Anthropic reports a score of 70.6 percent on the Terminal-Bench 4.0 agentic coding test, compared with 10.3 percent for Sonnet 5. On GDPval-AA, a test of work across 44 occupations, it scored 1,844, two points below Opus 5.5. TechCrunch notes that Anthropic says the model's cyber capabilities are comparable to Opus 5, so Sonnet 5.5 is the first Sonnet subject to the cyber safeguards used for Fable and Opus. It is available on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, and with zero data retention. Help Net Security reports that developers who run Sonnet with thinking turned off must switch to a new between_tools setting. Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 will follow in the coming weeks.
