OpenAI appears to be preparing 'o,' an always-on ChatGPT assistant that may get its own email identity

OpenAI appears to be testing an always-on assistant called 'o,' according to BleepingComputer. Users on X noticed that 'o, your always-on assistant' was briefly listed as a benefit of the $100 ChatGPT Pro plan. It appeared alongside more Work and Codex usage, maximum memory, 100GB of file storage and early access to new features. BleepingComputer also found a dynamic configuration that pairs the display name 'o' with an email suffix of '-o', which suggests the assistant could have some form of email capability or identity. An always-on assistant would presumably keep working on tasks while a user is not actively in ChatGPT, but OpenAI has neither confirmed nor denied the feature and has not described how it would work. The report also mentions references to an internal system called 'Aeon.' OpenAI has confirmed that DevDay 2026 will take place on September 29 in San Francisco, where the company is expected to announce new features. BleepingComputer says more details about 'o' may come there. The leak comes during a week of scrutiny of how OpenAI's autonomous agents behave, which adds weight to questions about what permissions a persistent assistant with its own email identity would have.
