White House asks OpenAI and Anthropic to keep new models from UK testers until the US reviews them
The request from the Office of the National Cyber Director would end the privileged early access that Britain's AI Security Institute has had to frontier models.

The White House has asked OpenAI and Anthropic not to share new AI models with the UK government's AI Security Institute until US government testing is done, Politico reports. The report cites a person familiar with the matter and a senior administration official. Both spoke on condition of anonymity. The request came from the Office of the National Cyber Director. The senior official said the administration wants to review the models and make sure US systems are secure before the models go to US partners. "Because they're American companies and this has been our policy with every new frontier model that comes out," the official said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The request leaves both companies with a hard choice. They can withhold models from the UK institute, which Politico calls one of the best-resourced government testing agencies in the world and which previously had privileged early access, or they can risk upsetting the Trump White House. If the companies comply, the order in which governments evaluate frontier models would change, and the UK's pre-release testing could lose access or be delayed. The report does not say how either company has responded or how long US review would take.
