Trump calls international AI oversight a 'globalist scheme' a day before Altman and Amodei brief the UN Security Council

President Donald Trump used his Tuesday speech to the UN General Assembly to reject international oversight of artificial intelligence, which he called a "globalist scheme" to control the technology. According to Fortune, he has started calling the technology "superintelligence." Trump also targeted AI safety advocates. He said the same people who had warned about global warming "are now saying that AI is going to kill us all," and made clear he would not act on those warnings. "I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," he said. The speech came a day before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei were scheduled to brief the UN Security Council at a Wednesday afternoon session on AI and international security. An OpenAI spokesperson told Reuters that Altman was expected to discuss the company's safety work and the importance of international cooperation. The exchange widens the gap between the White House and the leaders of the two biggest US AI labs. Fortune notes that Amodei published an essay on September 12 calling for industry restraint.
