ShinyHunters claims it breached the FBI and stole data on agents and job applicants

The FBI is investigating an attack on its own systems after the cybercrime group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility. The Monday breach, first reported by 404 Media, let the group temporarily deface the FBI's jobs site. In a lengthy post on its data-leak site, ShinyHunters claimed it stole "very sensitive data on almost all FBI agents and individuals who filed an application with the FBI for a job." The claim has not been independently confirmed. "The FBI is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating," an agency spokesperson said. An alert on the jobs site says apply.fbijobs.gov and the Special Agent Application Portal are unavailable. CyberScoop called the incident a sobering escalation for ShinyHunters, which previously targeted major companies in data extortion attacks. The attack puts the group in its most direct conflict yet with the agents who investigate that kind of crime. If the stolen data is as extensive as claimed, it could expose the identities of federal law enforcement personnel and of people who have applied to join the bureau. That would raise risks for them that go beyond ordinary breach exposure.
